Attributed to John Constable R.A. Together with receipt of purchase from The Fine Art Society.
Provenance: Identified during a routine valuation appointment in the Cotswolds. In the catalogue 'L'opera completa di Constable' (1979, Rizzoli), Robert Hoozee suggests a group of 25 small sky studies attributed to John Constable could be the work of either son, Lionel or Alfred Constable. A number of these works were included in the Newson-Smith sale at Christie's in 1951. The Newson-Smith Collection was purchased through Leggatt's in the 1890s from Ella Mackinnon, John Constable's Granddaughter.
Overall good condition with no sign of loss of paint or damage. Structure of paint is stable. Impasto visible in cloud plumes. The top sheet bears to pin-holes (top left and right corners). See photos in UV lighting.
