Attributed to John Constable R.A. (1776-1837) - Three Cloud Studies, oil on paper, with The Fine Art Society label verso inscribed 'Cloud Effect Studies by John Constable R.A., November 1951, from Sir Frank Newson Smith Collection', sheet dimensions from top to bottom: 11.4 x 8.6 cm; 17 x 7.3 cm; 11.3 x 7.5 cm, frame dimensions: 53.5 x 33.4 cm. Provenance: Identified during a routine valuation appointment in the Cotswolds. Private collection, by descent to the present owner; Purchased from The Fine Art Society, London, November 15, 1951; Purchased from Christie, Manson & Woods 'the Property of Sir Frank Newson-Smith, Bart. ; Also Ancient and Modern Pictures and Drawings from Other Sources', Friday, January 26, 1951.

In the catalogue 'L'opera completa di Constable' (1979, Rizzoli), Robert Hoozee suggests a group of 25 small sky studies attributed to John Constable could be the work of either son, Lionel or Alfred Constable. A number of these works were included in the Newson-Smith sale at Christie's in 1951. The Newson-Smith Collection was purchased through Leggatt's in the 1890s from Ella Mackinnon, John Constable's Granddaughter.
