Arthur Ballard was a key figure of the Liverpool art scene in the 1950s-60s. A versatile artist, he frequently exhibited at the Liverpool Academy, where he served as president from 1964 to 1968. While lecturing at the Liverpool School of Art, he tutored many students who developed professional careers, including John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe.
Considerable wear to the surface of the painting at the edges with some flaking/loss of paint. Small puncture to the canvas at the top right edge. Hole in the canvas at the right edge. Wear to the painting and primer with canvas fibres exposed at the corners and edge. Minor specks of black substance/paint on the face of the painting. Indentation and loss of paint where a historic frame slip made contact with the painting. Dirt to the surface of the painting. Wear and tears to the canvas on the edge of the stretcher.
