An exceptional Art Deco period natural Alexandrite dress ring, with single fancy cushion cut stone, 7.0ct approx, mounted in unmarked white metal (previously described as platinum) with three brilliant cut diamonds set in trefoil motifs to shoulders, size K, 4.2g

Sold with historic insurance valuation by Carrington & Company Ltd, 130 Regent Street, London W1 dated 15/7/1970 listing a figure of £3,300 and later Sotheby’s valuation / sale entry report, offering to consign the ring for sale in the Important Jewels sale, 21st June 2001 in Bond Street, London with an estimate of £10,000 - £12,000. (The family ultimately decided to keep the ring at this time).

Property of a private Gloucestershire lady, this ring known to have been present in the same family since the late 19th century and has never before been presented to the market:

This Alexandrite stone is understood by family repute to have been brought back from the Ural mountains in Russia in 1895 by a military attaché aide-de-camp on secondment and gifted to his wife (our vendor’s grandmother, nee Eileen Reeves of Besborough,
Ireland).

The attaché sadly died soon afterwards. Some time later, Eileen married our vendor’s grandfather, C Pickering, who later became Duke of Wellington.

The stone was set into a ring in the mid to late 1920’s and has remained unchanged since, in unbroken ownership of the same family until consignment here.
