John Taylor of Bath, a fine and scarce 18th century fruitwood cased bracket clock of diminutive proportions, the pad top fitted with brass carrying handle, cornered by gilt metal finials over a 5.5” chapter ring populated with black Roman and Arabic numerals, centred with name plate and day / date aperture, below a subsidiary strike/silent dial, with gilt spandrels and pierced brass fretwork to case, facing a double fusee six bell pull repeating verge movement, the backplate intricately engraved with allegorical scene detailing Neptune with trident and cornucopia, 42cm high (including handle) 23.5 x 16.5cm. Complete with keys and pendulum
sold with Charles Thomson insurance valuation and repair documents dated January / February 1977 and advertisement for Laurie Leigh Antiques illustrating this timepiece, c1974, in a later associated protective pine case
Provenance: Consigned for sale directly by the family of the writer, in which it has been in unbroken ownership following Lee's passing in 1997, the famed local figure remembered most for his works to include 'Cider With Rosie', 'As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning' and 'A Moment of War' and locally for his connection to his home in Slad and the celebrated Woolpack Inn
