An exceptional 22ct yellow gold full scale replica of The Oxus Treasure Jug, of ovoid form with horizontal fluting graduating towards base, the faceted handle terminating in a lion’s mask, biting the jug’s top collar, hallmarked to underside, London, 2018, 16.7cm high, 748 grams

Provenance: Commissioned as a wine jug by the vendor who oversaw the accurate recreation of this famed historic object for daily use

Footnote: The Oxus Treasure jug is one of the finest surviving objects from the famed Oxus Treasure, a remarkable collection of Achaemenid Persian gold and silver artefacts discovered near the River Oxus (Amu Darya) in Central Asia. Crafted from precious metal and decorated with elegant fluted sides and refined proportions, the jug demonstrates the exceptional skill of Persian metalworkers during the 5th–4th centuries BC. As part of a treasure thought to have originated from a temple treasury, it provides valuable insight into the wealth, artistry, and cultural influence of the Achaemenid Empire at its height
