SPRING IS HERE
With a strong
smell of Spring in the air gardeners become restless - anxious to begin planting
and cultivating and sometimes completely rearranging their gardens. With this
in mind the auctioneers were able to offer a number of good garden items, principally
a near pair of 19th century limestone urns which had been consigned for sale
by executors in January but agreed with the auctioneers that these were to be
held back until the Spring when the gardeners interest would be at its peak.
They were heavily contested before selling at £2,800, and several stone troughs
of varying sizes totalled £820.
Within the sale
room a Regency rosewood dining table set on a central square pedestal realised
£1,550, a Victorian Gothic oak revival bookcase with four glazed doors sold
for £1,000 and a Victorian mahogany piano top Davenport also realised £1,000.
Amongst the small
objects during the first days auction a remarkable £920 was taken for an outsized
cut and ribbed glass vesta strike with a simple silver band, while £760 secured
a collection of bright 19th century Maori beadwork - three pieces comprising
a sheath, a bag and a panel. An oil painting by W.V. Tippet showing sheep in
a moorland landscape realised £740.
Other prices included
a Victorian oak extending dining table £850, another at £680, an early oak joint
stool £720, and old English oak court cupboard £700, and an inlaid Edwardian
ladies cylinder top desk £700.
The auctioneers
next sale will be held on 21st/22nd May and already contains a quantity of interesting
probate instructions.
