Wotton
Auction Rooms are located on the western edge of the Cotswolds
in the town of Wotton-under-Edge. The Rooms occupy an
enviable position in the
old Tabernacle overlooking the pleasant
spread of the village. Wotton is serviced
by bus from Gloucester,
Cheltenham and Stroud which in turn are on main line railway
routes.
Within Wotton itself are a number of cafes and restaurants, many hotels
and B&Bs trade in the surrounding area. The
Cotswolds considered by many to be one of the most beautiful
areas of
the British Isles and has been occupied from the
earliest times.
The vast
number of burial mounds and encampments
should be proof enough of
that. Later the area was
settled by the Romans who for a while made Cirencester the
capital. The Middle Ages saw The Cotswolds flourish as the
foremost wool producing area in the country, only to decline in
the18th
century. Cheltenham and Bath
rose
as Spas in the late 18th century
and early 19th century and the Cotswold
villages continued
their quiet
existence base on agriculture.
It
is from such a background that much of the contents of our monthly sales
are gleaned. It is a wonderful place in which to live
and work and which
we never take for granted.
This
section gives details on these and other aspects of travelling to
and staying in Wotton-under-Edge. We hope you enjoy it.
